...and then came the snow again

...and then came the snow again. We emerged into the diffuse white light of a snowy morning, eyes peering, skin tensing against the cold. Why so soon? We had had no time to recover from the last snows. Our winter stores were empty by the last thaw and the ground was either too wet or hard to grow any more. With the onset of new snows things were beginning to look very bleak.

All of our people gathered for one last attempt to get some food. We huddled like penguins in a tight ball outside the door of Lidl. If we were lucky some over-spiced foreign sausage or a jar of suspicious looking gherkins could be ours. The doors opened and we burst inside to be met with instant disappointment. Empty shelves lined the walls. We trawled up and down the aisles and found nothing to eat. I did pick up a book about Cunard Liners, a kite in the shape of a Transformer and a camping stove (gas not included).

Back in the cold of the car park we stared into each others frightened eyes. Would we see the end of this winter?
