Wool against Weapons – only 3 days to go!!

There are three days to go to the Wool against Weapons gathering at Aldermaston, where the seven nile long scarf will be joined together to link the centre of nuclear weapons material production with the factory at Burghfield where the nuclear bombs are made.

I have blipped Jaine Rose before, and about her campaign to alert people to the madness of the imminent investment of £80 billion by the British government in renewing the Trident nuclear missile systems. Now the last minute preparations are being made to all the pink wool which has been knitted by people in many countries to create the scarf of peace.

Tomorrow I will be helping to film the initiator of the project, Jaine Rose, and my colleague asked me to go to record some video of some local people who were gathering tonight. They were sewing the metre long sections of knitted wool that have been sent to Jaine from all over the world into the 40 metre rolls which will be transported to the site on Saturday and there will be joined to create the final scarf. Events like this gathering have been happening all over the lace for many months.

Tomorrow we interview Jaine again and then on Saturday we will travel in some of the coaches from Stroud and will film the event. It is possible that CND will also be organising their own film crews to create other films telling different aspects of the story.

I asked the sixteen people gathered tonight at Sarah's house in various parts of the house if they minded being photographed for publicity, and they all agreed. So to help tell the story, here are a just a few of the committed people who are doing their small part to support Jaine's campaign. Do have a look at the website, and even better come along on Saturday and show your faces. But you must dress in pink I am told!

Have a look at this fantastic collection of pictures of literally thousands of sections of the pink wool knitted already.

Wool against weapons

Yarn Bomb, not real Bombs!

Wool Against Weapons – anti war grassroots campaign – will unroll a 7 mile long knitted Peace Scarf in pink – to draw attention to the Governments proposed £80bn spend to renew Trident, in what will be the biggest anti war demo in recent years.

Thousands of knitters have been joining in from all over the world, in what has been a truly International effort to produce over 11,000 meters of scarf. This will be unrolled between AWE Aldermaston and AWE Burghfield on August 9th 2014.

The scarf will then be repurposed into blankets which will be used for humanitarian aid, including projects in Tanzania, Uganda, Syria, and the U.K.

Wool Against Weapons is supported by CND, Action AWE and Lush Campaigns.

The Plan
Between now and August 2014 we will be creating a 7 mile long knitted peace scarf to stretch between Atomic Weapons Establishment sites at Aldermaston and Burghfield, Berkshire, where nuclear weapons are made.

This is part of a larger campaign to put pressure on the Government to ditch a planned £80bn spend on renewing the Trident Nuclear weapons programme.

Pick up your needles and crochet hooks and help us to protest in a pink, powerful and pro-active way to say No! to more investment in war in the U.K.

Can you knit a metre or two of this yarn bombing peace scarf?
