Old cheese

With several of us here in Aarhus for a couple of days, one of our local colleagues took us out to a traditional restaurant.

We had a superb meal, including more herring than I've eaten for years, washed down with excellent local beer. For the last course we were offered a choice of cheeses: fried camembert or this.

Apparently it's aged for a year (which I have to say doesn't sound all that long to me, but I'm no cheese expert). It smells...powerfully! I think it's what's described here under gammel dansk ost, with the comment: "If it's good, it can walk on it's own". It was served with radishes, raw onion and savoury jelly, with mustard on the side and rum to drizzle over it.

On our table of 5 - I was with a German, an Englishman, a Finn and a Dane - I was the only one who went for this. It was delicious! :)
