...Woodbine Willie's beauty! He was a Great War chaplain called Studdert-Kennedy (trained at one of the colleges that became the one I trained at) who had a great popularity in the trenches, and came home and worked to make Britain a place fit to have been fought for. His war poetry is nothing like Owen or Sassoon but it has an integrity and touch that appeals. This edition, from the late 1920s, was one of my sources for material for the Lights Out service the next day.
