Old book
I ventured out as far as the Foot of the Walk today, but nothing particular caught my eye and it was so perishing cold that I was reluctant to take my gloves off - let alone try to hold the camera with my trembling fingers. I'm a wimp, not like those tough Finnish blippers. :-)
I found a nice looking old book in the charity shop though. This is just volume IV. Although it proclaims that it features "recently discovered state documents" the author died in 1849 so...not that recent. Someone must have added the really up-to-the-minute stuff about the reform bill (1867). I googled to see what is at 59 South Bridge these days and shouldn't have been surprised to find that it's Blackwells, booksellers.
Apparently Tytler was persuaded to write the history by Sir Walter Scott, who seems to have put himself about quite a bit. Not only does he (Sir Wally) have a much blipped Monument but he also had a lot to do with popularising the wearing of the......kilt!!!
