Lost Georgian landscapes and the lives of men
St Marks Church, Portobello, Edinburgh
Late Georgian church that resembles a Greek Temple, dedicated in 1828.
It looks out to sea, a Greek temple on a north sea coast.
The fragments of a Georgian landscape that was itself morphing inspired by the new novels of Walter Scott and the songs of Carolina Oliphant aka Lady Nairne.
They both attended this church.
This was a fishing town and you can hear it in 'Caller Herrin' one of her songs
Wha'll buy my caller herrin?
Oh, ye may call them vulgar farin' -
Wives and mithers, maist despairin',
Ca' them lives o' men.
