Crown of Thorns

This is the 'Crown of Thorns' spire of St Michael's Church, Linlithgow. The original stone crown was demolished in 1821 amid fears that it was too heavy for the church's tower.
The church was without a spire until 1964 when the modern Crown of Thorns was erected.
It is built of prelaminated timber and clad in aluminium so that it will never lose its golden gleam and never tarnish.
