My Best Efforts - Year 3

Out for a Drive.....

.........on a beautiful day - too good to stay in - no gardening as my back was giving me Jip!!

BOUI for today covering my little trip out:-

1) My first stop was in Billinghay where I knew there to be a large mosaic covering a whole wall and depicting the history of the village.
It is well known for its rich and fertile agricultural land.

However, Billinghay was established by Saxon settlers as a fishing village. At that time the settlement would have sat on a gravel mound surrounded by marshland which flooded in the winter.
The draining of the fens in the 18th century created the fertile agricultural land which is still in use today.

If you go a bit larger, you can read most of what it says.

2) Next stop was Boston - where I noticed this very attractive Town sign. The town's famous Wednesday & Saturday large traditional market has been established for more than 450 years. The market place has recently been enhanced and is a bright, airy open space great for pedestrians, the markets themselves and other activities such as craft fairs. It is surrounded by a medieval network of lanes.

Another spectacular feature of the town is the Maud Foster Mill, one of the tallest and finest working windmills in the country. Built by Isaac & Thomas Reckitt in 1819, its turning 5 sails are still a feature of Boston today. You can obtain a very nice light meal there but if you are thinking of going, do check first as they are not open every day.

3) Then home via Kirton Holme - where I saw another very attractive sign - the village is situated within Kirton civil parish, and is approximately 4 miles (6 km) west from Boston and has a nine hole golf course, established in 1992.

On the 9th of April 2013, six crews from the area attended the blaze in Holme Road which spread from a shed to four adjoining homes. Fortunately there were no casualties but 4 homes were completely destroyed!

There were concerns for the gravity of the situation due to the eight gas cyclinders involved in the fire.

So that was my afternoon and very pleasant too.

The weather has been glorious - bright blue sky and fluffy white clouds - very warm - it must have got into the 80s as even now at 7.30pm it is still 75Deg F.!!

Enjoy your week - amazing to think it is 100 years tomorrow
since the First World War began!
