Men's Road Race

Today I decided to take in some of the atmosphere on the final day of the Commonwealth Games in Glasgow. I might be mad, as the weather forecast was not good and when I got into Glasgow the rain had started. Many of the streets in the city had been cordoned off for the Road Race.

Even in the bad weather the people of Glasgow had come out in their thousands to watch the race. This is some of the cyclists heading up the Saltmarket towards Tolbooth Steeple.

In a day of heavy rain only twelve riders completed the gruelling road race around the streets of Glasgow.

Geraint Thomas won Commonwealth Games gold for Wales ahead of Jack Bauer of New Zealand and Scott Thwaites of England. David Millar of Scotland finished eleventh.

Thomas, the time-trial bronze medallist on Thursday, triumphed in torrential rain on the 12-lap, 168-kilometres undulating course in a race which became about survival and brute strength. The 28-year-old from Cardiff, who finished the Tour de France last Sunday, twice suffered front-wheel punctures, including in the last six kilometres as his rivals neared.

Glasgow has done us proud and put on an amazing Commonwealth Games. Team Scotland had their best ever medal tally of 19 golds, 15 silvers and 19 bronze.

So its all back to ours....
