St Olaf's Kirk

Drove up to the North Isles of Shetland today and visited Unst. Walked to the most northerly tip of the Shetland Islands, and hence Scotland, in the Hermaness (land of the giants) National Nature Reserve. We stood on the cliffs watching a pod of about 10 young and adult Orcas (killer whales) in a feeding frenzy circled by a huge group of gannets. Our afternoon tea was from a flask admiring the view over the gannet colonies towards Muckle Flugga lighthouse, built by the father of Robert Louis Stevenson (who apparently used Unst as an inspiration for the map of treasure island).

On the way back down we stopped at St Olaf's (12th century) ruined church (but pristine graveyard apparently still in use) at Lund and I swam on a glorious empty sandy beach. Our last stop was the ruins of a Viking Longhouse and a broch at Underhoull on the other side of the bay.
