Bonneville Salt Flats

This morning saw an early morning rise and one of the largest breakfasts ever in the casino which is part of the Nevada Hotel, ELY where I stayed last night. All the bikers were in the cafe part early chatting about their routes for the day. The journey to Sundance, Utah took 5 hours because a detour to the Bonneville Salt Flats near Salt Lake City was called for.

The place was surrounded by miles of both hard and soft mud patterened with various sizes of tyre markings and many donught markings where people have been having fun. When you get to the compacted salt at the end it is silent except for the crunch of salt undrneath your feet. The salt itself is large and rounded like the size of big hailstones you typically get in the UK. The atmosphere did smell very faintly, but not of anything bad at all, more a healthy smell if that makes sense? There was a break in the rainy weather so when I was walking in the Utah sunsine along a stretch of the flat it was really warm, bright and difficult to see. It was ironic that of the three bikers who turned up when I was there two of them had accents suggesting they came from near to Bristol. It's a small world! Bonneville turned out to be much more interesting that I anticiapted and I would reccomend it if you are ever in the area. Watching all the boys playing with their toys on the flats (albeit tentatively in some cases) made me smile. I guess this place is a bit of a legend. The photo is me enjoying some salt crunching.

I am now settled at Sundance, the weather is rainy and grey as it has been all day but that won't stop me from getting a couple of walks in and having a lazy time of it for the next two days!
