This Madman Stuff
Books current and past.
Thursday night is footy night and for the first time in ages 5-aside was actually 5-aside so a highly competitive match was played for the first time in ages and we had bibs as well, very professional!
I finished The Road yesterday, well written and easy to read despite the fact that not a helluva lot goes on.
Juliet, Naked the new Nick Hornby book. An unknown quantity as yet as I have just started. However, Hornbys books are usually funny and good at pointing out how obsessive, ridiculous, oblivious, dismissive etc. men are. Not me obviously!
The Catcher In The Rye.
I think I was about 20 when I first read this, I think this was probably a great age to read it as it still had a great relevance to me, but I had the experience to appreciate what it was like being a teenager.
The story is about Holden Caulfield a teenager still at Prep School. Who heads back home to New York. In essence the story deals with the time Holden spends in New York, however, there are often moments when he rflects on his past and it follows his emotional and mental descent or as Holden liked to describe it "this madman stuff".
'You know that song "If a body catch a body comin' through the rye"? I'd like-'
Its "If a body meet a body coming through the rye"!' old Phoebe said.
'Its a poem. By Robert Burns.'
'I Know its a poem by Robert Burns.'
She was right, though. It is 'If a body meet a body comin through the rye' I didnt know it then, though.
I thought it was "If a body catch a body," I said. Anyway, I keep picturing all these little kids playing some game in this big field of rye and all. Thousands of little kids, and nobodys around - nobody big, I mean - except me. And i'm standing on the edge of some crazy cliff. What I have to do, I have to catch everybody if they start to go over the cliff - I mean if theyre running and they dont look where they are going I have to come out from somewhere and catch them. Thats all I'd do all day. I'd just be the catcher in the rye and all. I know its crazy, but thats the only thing I'd really like to be. I know its crazy.
