Another day, another train
A day of high adventure; we took the old cog railway to the summit of Mount Washington, over 6000 feet in the clouds.
The railway is the oldest cog railway in the world, having been built in 1866. Until recently it was also the steepest with inclines of up to 37 degrees, but it has been demoted to second steepest. The steam locos use a ton of coal and a thousand gallons of water on the return journey to the summit.
It was cold and cloudy at the top and a tad windy! The mountain is the place where the highest wind speed has been recorded, anywhere in the world; a terrifying gust of 231 miles per hour recorded by the summit weather station in 1934.
