Derwentwater and Catbells

The day started for me with an energetic run from the campsite along, or rather I should say up, Birk Road for a couple of miles before turning around and coming back. Looking more closely at the map later I noticed that the gradient in places was 1 in 5. But for most of the way back it was all downhill and a great sense of achievement.

The leisurely theme of the mornings continued after that before we set off for Keswick to see some friends of Barbara and David's who run a B and B there - amongst other things. It was a good day to do this sort of thing as the weather wasn't playing ball. Rain showers and cloud, but humid.

Spent a couple of hours and lunch with the friends - who we know as well - then went into Keswick for a bit of shopping. We took rather a long time to choose new pairs of walking shoes. The ones we use for low level walks are worn out and we've been looking for a new pair for a long time. This time we were successful and as we were buying two pairs we had a 10% discount.

The weather cleared up in the afternoon and we were able to walk, or in Barbara's case hobble, down to the lakeshore and along to Friar's Crag to look at the view towards Borrowdale. A fine view indeed, but not very photogenic as the hills were misty and the light not right. This shot, at the start of the lakeshore was the best I could do in the circumstances.

Later than we intended we drove back to the campsite. This time I do remember what we had - spicy smoked sausage pasta. And very good it was too. And I've just remembered what we had last night too; chicken with cannellini beans. It was so good, how could I forget?
