Where's the
fire?. In the right place, at the right time with a camera!
The Sudbury Mammoth Olde Tyme Rallye 1973 billed itsself as,"A show featuring the largest cross section of historic forms of transportation and machinery ever assembled in Great Britain. This is the aim to which members of the Sudbury Mammoth Olde Tyme Rallye committee have been working for four years to assemble today. From the foreword of the programme, Sir Richard Hyde Parker, Bt. President of the committee.
I was there with Johnny and Anthea and her boys. The fire pump had just shown off it's stuff in the main arena. There were ploughing demonstrations (heavy horse and steam ploughing engines) and a full size fair including steam yachts and a huge roundabout (carousel) powered by steam. Lots of agricultural machinery, hot air balloons and the Suffolk Guild of Bellringers with a portable ring of bells. Oh, the smells and the music of the calliope at the fair. The rally was actually up the road from Sudbury at Long Melford.
