Another Steep Lane
Steep cobbled lanes such as this (Priest Lane, Ripponden) were very difficult for horse drawn carts.
The horses' shoes slipped on the cobbles in both wet and dry conditions.
The rudimentary brakes on the carts were not all that efficient - particularly with a heavy load.
This was one solution to the dilemma.
The stone blocks were set against the wall so that the carters could rest their cart wheels against them - thus allowing the horses to rest.
