Finally got to see 'Boyhood' last night, which I've been looking forward to since the advance reviews from the festivals. The film was made over the course of 12 years, with the same cast, filmed for a few days each year, and telling the story of one boy's journey from kidulthood to adulthood from the ages of 6 to 18.
I thought for a while that I was going to be disappointed, that the film was a conventional family film with a gimmick, but as the time goes on, I was inevitably drawn to the main character and all sorts of connections (nostalgic, emotional) are quietly made. Some of the major life events happen offscreen, but we're made to feel them anyway.
I love Richard Linklater's films, and this one has echoes of all my favourites: Slacker, Dazed and Confused, my beloved 'Before' trilogy. Delightfully, Boyhood ends on a very definite nod to the famous record booth scene in Before Sunset. In the end, I loved this film.
