Buff-tailed bumblebee
I haven't been photographing bumblebees much this summer, partly as I took so many last year and partly as I have been trying to find new insect targets. But I couldn't resist this beautiful buff-tailed bumblebee, particularly because of the flower on which it is gathering nectar and pollen. This is hemp agrimony, Eupatorium cannabinum, a large native herbaceous plant. It is growing in my border in a location where I don't want it, right at the front and every Spring I think that I must transplant it further back. But I never do and, yesterday, I was quite glad as it gave me eye-level access to bumblebees!
