Treptower Park Soviet War Memorial
After a relaxing morning, a late breakfast and a bit of a chill out we set off into Berlin. We decided not to tackle the busy parts of the city today and instead headed for Treptower Park.
The park contains the Soviet War Memorial, a vast site built to commemorate Soviet soldiers in the Battle of Berlin in 1945. It was the central memorial to World War II in the former East Germany. It really is quite a spectacle, huge but simply laid out and somehow all the space in an otherwise bustling city seems fitting given what it represents, hopefully the blip gives some impression of scale with a few visitors meandering.
After this we went to investigate Spreepark, a former amusement park in East Germany. It is now derelict and slowly decaying having closed in odd circumstances in 2001. The site is fenced off and security is evident but it's a well visited site for anyone prepared to find a hole in the fence and avoid the barbed wire. Some German teenagers told us security eject 150 "visitors" every day! Obviously we had to get in and have a little look, it was the highlight of the day! The spookiest bit was the big Ferris wheel which was turning in the wind and creaking eerily.
An ice cream and then it was time to head back. We had a little Supermarket shop as the girls have decided to bake a cake this evening. Great how they like to take on a challenge like this whilst on holiday.
Thank you so much for putting yesterday's abstract on Spotlight for the day, a lovely surprise.
