Looming

I'd guess for at least half of the population this will be a familiar sight and need no explanation at all - the current unavoidable craze for making wristbands/bracelets out of tiny colourful elastic bands. It seems to have quite a bit in common with crochet and having been summoned to assist with a tricky set of instructions on Youtube I found it was a surprisingly absorbing activity and before long had mastered the Nautique and was contemplating some of the more advanced designs. It's a classic example of one of those things it would have been great to think of first, since the person who did is presumably now doing very well out of it, and also, I suspect, it is bound to become part of the shorthand iconography for the decade, in the same way the Eighties are associated with the Walkman and big hair, for instance.
