The Sandhill Crane

My racehorse assignment being postponed, due to heavy overnight rain turning the gallops into a quagmire, I set off across the swamp looking for the amazing Sandhill Crane. It was very windy, and there were few birds of any description to be seen; I could hear cranes, but only away in the distance. There were an overabundance of alligators however, (I gave up counting at 100), sleeping peacefully in the sunshine. See them here.

Eventually I tracked down some 20 or 30 Sandhill Cranes at the University of Florida's beef feeding station. No wild wet bogs for them, when they can find plenty to eat amongst the cattle! These were not the huge variety which can stand 4ft tall and have a wingspan of 8 feet.
