.... why do Italians specialise in small cars? Answer on the local postcards. Designed before motor cars and aircon, the Italian streets are piccolo and very cool in the mid-summer heat.

We've shopped locally, avoiding the supermarkets; Vietri has a baker, grocer, deli, fishmonger and tobacconist......a wide choice of cigarettes being more important than butcher meat. Every adult smokes and all of the kids on the beach have deep suntans. Says much about the Italian attitude to rules and advice. There is almost a complete absence of non-Italian tourists at this end of the Amalfi coast and my international sign language and speaking English loudly in an Italian accent are coming on a treat.
