Dorset Coast path: old stone quarries at Winspit

Purbeck stone was quarried along the rugged coast between St Aldhelm's Head and Durlston; it was lowered by crane onto barges and then transported by sea to Swanage.

This wide-angle view shows the extent of the quarries at Winspit. The quarrymen dug the best seams and propped up the roofs to prevent collapse. Here the roof of the workings seen behind the two walkers did collapse.

Towards the right you can just discern a yellow traffic cone; its function in this landscape is a mystery.
