CannyScot's Day

RRS Discovery

A dull, overcast day but remaining dry.

A week or so ago I said that I 'discovered' my wife Eleanor 50 years ago. Today is actually our 48th Wedding Anniversary. Perhaps it was fitting that we visited the area of the RSS Discovery with our grandchildren. The ship is in dry dock permanently. Unfortunately, because of a massive regeneration of the waterfront, the ship is surrounded by safety fencing which makes it difficult to take a good photograph.

The ship was the last traditional wooden three-masted ship to be built in Britain. Designed for Antarctic research, she was launched as a Royal Research Ship (RRS) in 1901. Her first mission was the British National Antarctic Expedition, carrying Robert Falcon Scott and Ernest Shackleton on their first, successful journey to the Antarctic, known as the Discovery Expedition. Details of their exploits and bravery is movingly displayed in the nearby Discovery Centre which is well worth a visit.

If you would like to see another view of the ship, a penguin lovingly embraced by our grandchildren and a beautiful fountain have a look at my Flikr set.

If you would like to see the Card I made for Eleanor, have a look at her Blip
