Nice Old Town
After enjoying a couple of hours by the pool in the morning, we ventured into Nice late afternoon.
I love the double decker trains but they're a little more run down compared to when I was here with work over 10 years ago. Upstairs it had to be to sit!
It was a beautiful evening to wander around the narrow streets of the old town. A light breeze and plenty of shade made the perfect temperature. There were plenty of photo opportunities including a man playing the guitar on some high steps overlooking the town and a wedding party dancing and chanting the traditional Maori Haka but I was very much taken by the long shadows on the ochre walls created by the window shutters.
Despite reading the timetable and asking at the ticket office before we left as well arriving 30-minutes early at the station, the last train home did not exist. We got as far as Cannes and there we were stranded with another couple of families.
We decided not to wait for the scheduled bus simply to discover it too was not coming! Instead, we shared a taxi with a French lady, her American husband and two children. With a shake of her head and just a little despair, her response to the missing train was, "Welcome to my country!" I guess this happens quite a lot.
