Strangers and brothers...

"Strangers and brothers" - the series of novels written by C P Snow between 1940 and 1970 introduces the character Lewis Eliot. The series follows his life and career from humble beginnings in an English provincial town, to reasonably successful London lawyer, to Cambridge don, to wartime service in Whitehall, to senior civil servant and finally retirement.

It can be hard work, but captures something of the power mechanisms that operate behind the scene in particular societies.... e.g. a Cambridge College (a thinly disguised Christ's) I first read "The Masters" at school. One day I may re-read the series.... or maybe not....
