Cornflowers

Blue cornflowers used to often be seen in cornfields but due to the use of modern agricultural methods they are now very rare in the wild. A 2005 audit identified just over 100 sites that are thought to be 'natural'. It is difficult now to tell whether the flowers are truly wild as they have escaped from gardens and the seeds are frequently added to "wildflower" seed mixes.
These, seen in large drifts of colour in a local village, are definitely not wild but they look very attractive by the roadside. The bee obviously approves.
