Have you guessed what it is yet? (Now, on second thoughts, in the light of recent events, not the most suitable comment to make).
Anyway, this is air-dried fish. The locals leave it out on large mats then pack it dried into these boxes. Goodness knows how many times the boxes are used, but it certainly isn't once. When they cook it, they boil it in water, then break the fish into pieces. It is then sieved out so that the fish soup is clear. I suppose in reality they are fish stock cubes. I've probably had some and didn't even know it!
