We’ve been trying to get a joiner to come out to look at possible repairs to J’s dad’s summerhouse for eight months.

In the end we turned to a York Council & Age UK directory of tradesmen who “prioritise” work for the elderly and vulnerable.

Fat chance. Out of five calls, one answered and said no way “too small a job to bother with” and four messages left, only one called back – and wasn’t interested.

And we say the government isn’t switched on to the needs of the elderly. We need to wake up as a society.
