Blue Lake St Bathans

The original name of town was Dunstan Creek. Gold was discovered here in 1863.by 1864 1000 people lived in Dunstan creek and a further 1000 in the immediate area. in 1866 the name Dunstan Creek was dropped and at the request of a deputation of miners it was changed to St Bathans. This was the original name given by the first surveyor of the district. in the late 1860's there were 15 hotels, a number of gambling and dance halls and many businesses. the lake was created by the sluicing practises used to extract the gold. many relics of the day are still visible around the lake area.
