One River: the Don Journey Starts Here

Finally, the journey I have been planning along the River Don began today. I had intended to start at the beginning of the year, but for a variety of reasons, I never seemed to be able to get started. Now I'm hoping to do a few miles at least once a week.

I did the walk up onto the moors to find out where it all begins, accompanied by Mr PB and a good friend who lives close by, and who acted as our guide. The forecast was a bit uncertain, and we did have one heavy shower, but the walk was absolutely delightful and mostly on fine paths and tracks across Access Land. So, where does the river start? Beyond the point at which the streams on Great Grains Moss converge is shown on the map as the River Don. The watershed from which the various streams flow in separate directions is at the boundary point of South Yorkshire, Kirklees and Derbyshire. This image is taken from inside South Yorkshire, looking downstream towards Penistone, to where the next leg of my journey will take me.

As an added bonus the wildlife was excellent - we saw an Owl, Buzzards, Stonechat, Mountain Hares, a Deer, to name just a few.
