Demolition times

The oldest part of the school is being demolished now. The top floor of this bit of the building used to be my classroom. It is a 1959 building and always seemed a bit tatty with its metal window frames and plastictiled corridors. This was the classroom I was i one day back in the 1990s when we had a small local earthquake and the whole building shook. Quite a relief to see those big iron girders which were holding the building up! Quite sad to see it all going. I don't know whether anyone has taken any pictures but this was the original Boys' Grammar School so many many teenage boys would have this building as part of their lives. It's been part of my life since 1977 in its latest redesignation as a Mixed Comprehensive school.

Good job it has so many girders - the whole area is littered with old mine shafts - on had to be capped before they could continue with the work on the current redevelopment of the school. All part of the industrial heritage of the area - very little of that left now!
