Tower of Ransdorp

Some sort of landmark if you go to the countryside near where I live is this church tower. It belongs to a little hamlet situated in the flat fields out here and seems rather out of place - it's all meadows, and then suddenly this 40-meter thing on the horizon. The village is called Ransdorp (some info here) and it turns out it became prosperous because of dairy production, with Amsterdam as its market. This wealth allowed the inhabitants to erect this sizable tower - but they ran out of money for the spire, and so it remains like this to this day ('stomp', we say in Dutch - or 'geknot' if you are of a more poetic nature ;) ). Fun fact: Rembrandt made some drawings of the landscape here (one of his wives was from here) including the tower, see here. If after seeing this picture anyone can't get enough of the tower, no worries: you can order stickers, boxes and even ugly mugs with Rembrandts drawing on them!
