Coombe Keynes, Dorset: redundant Holy Rood Church

A 13th century church, of which only the tower survives intact. Most of the body of the church was remodelled in the 19th century, the architect was John Hicks of Dorchester, whose apprentice at the time was the young Thomas Hardy.

The Church of the Holy Rood (or Holy Cross) was made redundant in the 1970s, and is now cared for by a charitable trust. In this photo, much of the grass in the graveyard is uncut, but some monuments have been tended.

In the background can be seen part of the charming Old Vicarage.
