MONO MONDAY ... ROAD
... a new MonoMonday Challenge this week with Gingernan, and an interesting start with "road" being the subject!?
Monday also being babysit day with our grand daughter Alice means putting my time utilisation skills to the test.
Anyway, when I saw the subject last week thought if the weather good we would check out the old Great Western Highway section which is now closed at Knapsack Bridge which was part of the original Lapstone Zig Zag rail link to the Blue Mountains.
This section of the road utilising the via duct built "back when" in around 1865, caused a delay with deciding the route up the hill from Leonay/Emu Plains as the M4 was being built.
info from the ole WIKI..... At the western end of the Western Freeway as it was known in the late 1960s was to be routed through the Mitchell's Pass area through to Blaxland, however due to protests and the fact that the historical Lennox Bridge was very close to the intended pathway, it was decided to terminate the road at Russell Street Emu Plains until a solution could be later found. This would have bypassed the Lapstone Hill area and avoided the sharp bends as the road enters Glenbrook. In December 1989 the extension of the freeway from Russell St, west to the Gt Western Hwy in the vicinity of Governors Dr would bypass the narrow and winding section of the Gt Western Hwy, including the historic Knapsack Bridge. In June 1993, the new section of freeway between Emu Plains and Lapstone was opened to traffic.
It is now part of the many kilometres of walks in and around the Blue Mountains, and although I did not go right to the bottom, this gives an idea from below of the wonderful sandstone construction.
Enjoy, and thanks again to gingernan for hosting, and have a look in LARGE.
