Demolition Time

Work is taking place on the former Scottish Provident offices on St. Andrews Square, Edinburgh and South St. David Street. Designed by architect William George Leslie and built between 1966 and 1969 it is a Brutalist eyesore that is amazingly a category B listed building considered a modernist icon! Some of the façade is being saved and incorporated into a development of retail, office and expensive apartments; incorporating the far more interesting category A listed 3-3a St Andrew Square. What is really criminal is that lovely Georgian buildings were pulled down to build the Scottish Provident office in the first place - Including the home of 18th century philosopher David Hume. Historians hope that during the work remnants of his house's cellar may be uncovered.
