These plants are members of the nightshade (Solanaceae) family (tobacco, cape gooseberries, tomatoes, deadly nightshades, potatoes and chili peppers). The leaves closely allied to tobacco (Nicotiana), with the leaves having a similar narcotic effect. The genus name "petun", is a Tupian Indian name for tobacco.
Apparently there are 35 species and are native to tropical South American genus.
They are tough, weather resistant plants in mild climates many will flower year-round. Ref: abc.net.au
