Scottish innovation

Scotland has contributed much in both medicine and engineering innovation over the years of the Union and nothing illustrates this better than the development of ultrasound as a medical imaging technology. This e-book in my library describes the history. At one time I was the coordinator of the British Medical Ultrasound Society's historical collection housed in Glasgow. Professor Ian Donald, the motivating personality behind the development of this now ubiquitous technology was born near here in Liskeard of Scots parents. He lived as a child in South Africa, trained in London and produced his definitive work in Glasgow after the war. It was partly the juxtaposition of shipbuilding technology, his wartime experiences in the RAF and his appointment as professor of midwifery than facilitated the process, along with the intervention of a young engineering intern called Tom Brown.
