The world's first detective story

Book group again tonight and we were reading The Moonstone. I enjoyed it (although it needed a lot of close reading) because it was the pleasure of a detective story without having to read lots of gruesome descriptions of murders and dead bodies (which I dislike). But there was a mixed response - some people found the Victorian prose a bit heavy going.
