Boxes in the sky ...

The apartment we are renting in Brooklyn is really close to the Barclay Centre, the sport/entertainment arena that opened shortly before we arrived. I have loved photographing the hulking behemoth in different light and weather... great curves and lines and colour.

Unfortunately the next stage of the development is underway, smack-bang hard against those beautiful curves. B2 is a 32 story apartment block, made entirely from these coloured modules. An innovative concept, 930 modules are being manufactured down the road at the old Brooklyn Navy Yards and are being placed on trucks and delivered to the site. Each module is the size of a shipping container, and a few can be placed together to build an apartment.

Apparently it will be the largest modular building in the world. I imagine the local IKEA store is beside itself with glee at the thought of filling all those little boxes ... with ah, little storage boxes.
