Gloucester Road Tube Station, London

This station captures the history of the tube in one go.

On the right is the October 1868 Metropolitan Railway building where the lines are just below the surface. The station was in the middle of market gardens when it was built, beyond the housing that extended out of London in to the countryside.

This station operated as part of the 'inner circle' service run by the Metropolitan Railway and the District Railway, which was renamed in 1949 to the Circle Line.

On the left is the 1906 Great Northern, Piccadilly and Brompton Railway building where the lines are in deep tubes underground (now the Piccadilly line). It's another Leslie Green design in Arts & Crafts style with his ox-blood red tiles.

Deep underground, there's a spare platform that is used for occasional art displays.
