Fosters' Bank ?
As I glanced up at Lloyds bank to look at the clock, I noticed the statue over the main doorway and then the name Fosters. After living here for many years since the age of 7 and passing by so many times, I realised how unobservant I was before blip ! So, after looking up details about the building, I found some interesting facts. It was designed by the Victorian architect Alfred Waterhouse and built in 1890-93, originally part of Fosters' Bank with the name still over the doorway. The Foster brothers also owned several mills in and around Cambridge. The building is considered quite unusual, spoiled to some extent by a Neo-Tudor extension on the corner. I think it is rather lovely and fits in with Cambridge architecture much better than a lot of other newer buildings. The interior, which of course, I was not allowed to photograph, is absolutely stunning in a Romanesque style, high ceiling with domed roof and exquisitely tiled. I eventually looked at the clock and was in plenty of time to meet friends for a snack before going to the Arts Cinema to see 'Belle' which we loved, especially as it was based on truth.
