Managed to catch the Robert Mapplethorpe Exhibition at the Gallery of Modern Art today before it finishes on Sunday. Everything had a very controlled feel to it, all perfectly posed and framed, with huge emphasis on balance and symmetry, light and dark. Interestingly of all the pictures in the exhibition those of the children were not so rigidly composed and some of the later self portraits (just before his death) seem less emotionally detached, somber and softer. If you've got time before Sunday, go take a look, it makes for a very stimulating hour and a half.
