Mrs Merganser and 8 chicks were swimming in the river soaking up the late evening sunlight as I approached them. As soon as I was clocked getting the camera ready, she ushered them ashore to the riverbank and sheltered them under her feathers.

By the next day there were only 6 chicks and on the following day only 4. The local herons and other predators had taken their toll
