Bella Trieste
A brief but enjoyable stop over en route to Slovenia.
The Lonely Planet guide to Italy isn't particularly generous with it's description of Trieste. I can't remember the specifics but something about an understandable lack of identity given it's location, an outpost...
I suppose when comparing it to many of the more famous tourist hot spots within Italy that it may not emerge at the top of the list when planning a trip. But I enjoyed it.
The image is of the large jutting stone pier that rushes out into the Adriatic. It was a warm evening and many people had gathered. One bunch of ten or so teenage lads were sharing a watermelon. Not a lot like home.
