'Up on the Downs'
It's been a fabulous day....no sign of the rain yet!
We had a lovely few hours up on the South Downs. A walk from Wilmington up to the 'Long Man'.
The Long Man is one of the greatest mysteries of the Sussex countryside. he stands 70 metres high (231 feet) The earliest reference to the Long Man suggests the original figure was a marking in the grass rather than a solid line. During the Victorian period the shape was marked with yellow bricks, more recently replaced by the concrete blocks.. The Long Man is best viewed from a distance.
The lads in the collage were having a rest as we approached them. They had been walking for four hours as part of their Bronze Duke of Edinburgh Award. I had a chat with them, they told me where they were staying this evening...still had a long way to go... I have managed to phone the farm and got to speak with the leader, explaining that I'd like them to have a copy of their photo. He was thrilled and said he will put it in their Newsletter..so hopefully he received my e mail. They were such a lovely group and were all exhausted..but very cheerful!
