Sacrificial bog

It is only 4 days since the boys and I last visited Sagnlandet Lejre - the historical open-air park, where you can experience houses and settings from the Iron Age, Stone Age, Viking Age and 1800th century + historical workshops and domestic animals, but when you have paid entry once in the year, you can get in for free for the rest of the season, so we will probably be going back often this summer.

Helle doesn't live far from the park and she wanted to come too, so I went to her place in the morning and then we trained dogs. When we were done training, we packed our lunch, water for the dogs and us etc. and went to Sagnlandet Lejre.

We had a great day. Saw so many interesting things and enjoyed a long walk amongst all the historical settings. It was really nice. We sat in the middle of a viking stone ship and ate lunch. Fabulous.

This picture is from the Iron Age Sacrificial bog. I suggested that we should sacrifice Helle and see if it would bring me luck and make the spirits like me, but she was not keen on the idea, so we didn't ;-)

The Sacrificial bog is a rather grusome place. Horses on poles, statues of Germanic gods and many other votive offerings create a very special atmosphere. They were placed there because Iron Age people sacrificed all manner of things to their gods as everything was seen to have a soul: earth, water, fire, stars and trees. The spirits were everywhere. All offerings were a way of keeping on good terms with the spirits and gods.

The dogs in the foreground are from left:
My boys Biscuit, Beat and Hero and Helle's 3 dogs Cookie, Jazz and Doggie.

Even more grusome details in large!

More pics here!

See you tomorrow.
