"It's an instant memorial," Sarah said, talking about the drive we have to take pictures. "So much that is beautiful comes flowing toward us all the time, and when we press the shutter and take the image, it's a tribute to that moment, a way of saying thank you."

"An act of love," I said.

"An act of love and gratitude," she said. "A shrine to a moment."

Sarah has been Sue's best friend for more than thirty years. "Kendall, you and I are lucky that we  understand each other so well," she mused. "It could so easily have been otherwise."
