Beggars bridge
This bridge comes with it's own legend, which for once is true.
The bridge was paid for by Tom Ferris, a local lad who wanted to marry a local landowners daughter, but couldn't because he was poor.
He decided to go to sea from Whitby to make his fortune, but the night before he was due to sail, the river was swollen so he couldn't visit her.
He was away for four years, which included fighting in Drakes navy against the Armada, and a spot of piracy in the Caribbean, and returned a rich man.
He married his sweetheart and went on to become a businessman, and subsequently Lord mayor of hull, when his wife died he paid for the bridge to be built in her memory so that no lovers would be separated as they had been.
His grave is in Holy Trinity in Hull.
