This is part of the Lake Padden estuary which flows into Bellingham Bay. When the tide recedes it pretty much leaves a large mud flat. In the days around 1900 before a lot of development there was much quicksand in the area which had swallowed many a wagon, etc. I assume they learned very quickly to avoid the area.
